Page design
The following is a mix of magazine and newspaper pages.
The (Greensboro) News & Record's Sunday TriadCareers section also contains TriadHomes material. I found a piece about an entrepreneur who manufactures a line of furniture in High Point, NC, just down the road from Greensboro. As that the story applied to both careers and homes, I used it as the display on both fronts, jumping material from the front to the back of the section. The gray box was the space for an advertisement.
An end of 2016 piece about work changes that can be expectedin the new year.
As a preview to a fundraising "Big Hair Ball" where aspiring clothing designers show new work, we profiled one of the artists and her dresses. The photographs were from the designer and a submitted image from the previous year's event.

For a February piece about couples who also work together, we focused on three husband/wife business owners.
The Greensboro Chamber of Commerce produces an annual 56-page magazine guide to the city, Greensboro Thrives. I was the Creative Director on the project, managing the majority of the project with content, communication/appprovals with the chamber and handling all design, headlines and photo editing. I also photographed several spreads. The end product was markedly different from years past and was exceptionally well received. These are examples of several of the main spreads; other pages follow the same format.

A pair of stories, a local columnist and a piece from The Washington Post, paired around the theme of "Looking.." for work and motivation.
An excellent piece from The Washington Post about the hardships endured by a homeless woman in Atlanta looking for work. I went bold, simple and stark to get out of the way of the words and pictures.

The center spread of a Special Section for first-time home buyers included a series of steps to follow in making the process as easy as possible. I turned the numbers into artistic / unusual "houses" hand-drawn with colored pencil. I worked with the ad stack as best as I could. Though it turned out well, this is a spread that I'd like another shot at: I'd call in a favor to get rid of the ads, polish the numbers a bit more, run them larger and make the columns widths consistent.

Great Escapes was a travel-based special section to provide interesting ideas for get-a-ways, near and far. I created all of the "passport stamps" on the fly to bring in a feeling of a travel adventure, even if it's Saxapahaw, N.C. Other pages in the section followed a similar theme and grid.

A rundown of upcoming job fairs, with a photograph I took from one we previewed, anchored this page.
In the hiring process, some employers are utilizing videos to screen candidates. A Greensboro firm is helping companies learn and use the system. I created the illustration instead of photographing computer screens in some fashion. I also wrote the headlines on all of the pages shown here.

I was training an A1 designer the night a murdered UNC-CH woman was identified. Student body president Eve Carson was kidnapped, robbed and shot by two local men as she walked to her office late at night. The display was planned to be that night's candlelight vigil. I found an image in the computer system of Carson that had been sent to a reporter. Taken days before her murder, it showed her personality and energy as part of a project called "Why Do You Do What You Do?". I pitched it to the A1, photo and design editors as a better way of documenting what was lost.
