I first developed Tri-X in a high school classroom closet. Since then, I've worked at various publications around the country as a Photojournalist, Photo Editor, Director of Photography, Designer, Assistant Design Editor and Art Director.

Recent images are at the top; older photographs follow. Almost daily photographic musings are on Instagram.

OLDER WORK

The following is a selection of images from my time at The Kossuth County Advance and The Algona Upper Des Moines, a twice-weekly in Algona, Ia., and The Herald in Jasper, Ind.

Members of the Algona Garrigan football team celebrate after defeating a heated rival in a playoff game. This image won Best of Show in the 1987 Iowa Press Association contest; the entire portfolio won Photographer of the Year / Small Markets.

As part of a photo story on a local obstetrician, I was able to document several births, including one couple's first.

The drill squad from the Ferdinand Marching Rangers during a pre-performance pep talk. This image was part of a story on the season of a highly-regarded high school marching band, from first practice to the state finals.

A mother is consoled by her daughter following a minor traffic accident in Jasper, Ind. This image placed in a national clip contest, ran as a full-page in LIFE magazine and was used in several LIFE subscription drives.

A mother consoles her daughter at a candle light vigil for Jasper, Ind., troops. The daughter's husband was stationed in Iraq. Part of documenting life in smaller communities means that you come across the same people over years. These are the same women in the previous car accident photo.

The area around Jasper, Ind., is home to many furniture manufacturing facilities running the spectrum from lower-end, particle board hotel furniture to solid hardwood, $10,000 desks. I sent letters to about 10 factories asking for a quick tour from a manager and then access on another day to wander, photographing the craftsmen. Eight companies agreed; the resultant essay ran over six or seven pages of the tabloid-sized Saturday newspaper. The following image is from the same story.

This man was asleep on his coach when a tornado ripped off part of his roof. Seven people died in the Petersburg, Ind., storm.

A last story before bed for a family who home schools their children.
